i like to travel with a buddy so we can keep each other out of trouble, but i’ve no problems going it alone. any more than 1 or 2 people with me is a no go though. any group bigger than that and conflicting agendas are inevitable, so i’d just wind up doing my own thing anyways.

the majority of violence i’ve been involved in has taken place near home rather than abroad (maybe that’s subconciously why i like to travel?).

nothing that serious, a few things stick out.

me and a buddy beat a guy who was beating his girlfriend in korea. we were drunk walking back to the hotel at the end of the night, stumbled on the scence, agreed something should be done. girl caught a cab and we went on our way without much concern for the dude.

almost got into a fight with a couple russians sailors who came to drink with me and my russian buddy alex (all started over the fact that i was leaving and didn’t want to drink any more, silly as it sounds). alex defused that one before any actual trouble happened though.

any other time i even came close to getting in a fight in korea it was with drunk or loudmouth GI’s in Itaewon.

holland and i almost had to duke it out with a bar owner and his thugs in thailand over a disputed bar tab. a local moto taxi came round and tried to mediate, wound up taking our side. holland picked up a pipe, and that’s when i decided i’d settle things by offering to pay half. at that point i had become more apprehensive of the legal consequences than the physical ones. they accepted. after waking up and thinking about it though, i’m pretty sure we wound up getting a discount on the actual bill…

closer to home i’ve been in a few rumbles. broke my hand in a fight, swelled up like a softball with fingers. split my head open and needed stitches. been hit in the head on a couple occasions with baseball bats, both aluminum and wood (wood is worse). caught a grazing knife wound to the head. been thrown down a flight of stairs. so on and so forth.

only lesson i can really think of is that it’s incredibly helpful to have someone around stay cool and and try to calm everyone down and resolve things peacefully, but even while that’s happening, just make sure you’re thinking about your positioning because shit could happen at any moment.

Today is the day. At 1:00pm EST Dunia begins her surgery. If you are so inclined, say a prayer for her today.

We took her to the lake yesterday for a day of swimming and tubing (don’t worry, the surgeon said it was ok and we drove really slow when she was on the inner tube). Never saw such a huge smile that lasted ALL day long. One day of fun before things get difficult and painful for a few weeks.

haha! i bet. even i love going out and tubing on the river, of course there’s usually alcohol involved when me and my compadres are doing it.

hope all goes well, thoughts are with her.

If you’re an American and you are not wealthy, You are poor because you choose to be! You could be rich in 4 years, but you won’t be because YOU ARE A LAZY SACK!

coming from a family that was far from wealthy, i can testify that you obviously don’t have a fucking clue what you are talking about. certainly there are a lot of people who aren’t well to do because of their own lack of will, but there are also plenty of people who are poor because of no fault of their own. medical problems, supporting a family (not just parents too. certainly you have known at least one kid who worked to help the family make ends meet), etc.

if you were someone i knew personally, i’d be a bit insulted for you to make a statement like that. but since clearly you are ignorant to the plight of some of the working poor, i guess i just can’t take the remarks seriously.

poker. i love poker. hold em is my game of choice.

blackjack is alright, but only when there are fewer decks.

they should just come out with a hard drive lo-jack device. between that and encryption one should be good to go.

      just a suggestion:

it would be cool if you could group jobs by type, in addition to where the companies are based, you know, security, translation, etc.

definitely not a bad start, though.

college is a great way to do some travelling and some learning. and also to do some networking for when getting a job becomes a priority. you don’t have to go, but i think it’d be a good idea. you can still do some work while you are there for local papers, and get some experience. study abroad and write about where you went. do some photography for your university’s publicity shit.

and you’ve always got summer, winter, and spring breaks to go on the road, too. college ain’t a bad idea at all, especially if you can get some scholarships to lighten the financial pressure.
