      Helping someone with research, particularly concerning New Guinea and Guadalcanal (sp?) operations. Any good books/links/articles etc.?

      Kramer, the best source for military records is the National Archives, try contacting them or you can show up in Wash DC and fill out a request for a “researchers card”. Find out what units were fighting in those areas and also look up the association, and the unit historian Example, the 33rd US infantry was in the Pacific theater, also such specialty units as “The black Cats” army air corps were down in that region.
