The most heartening development to come out of a major disaster such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami is the number of people worldwide who have put aside differences and petty squabbles and dug deep to help. There are always some spoilers who see such unexpected bursts of altruism through a cynical lens but most decent folks felt deeply moved by what they saw and wanted to do something positive in response.
There are many humanitarian agencies in the field now making a valuable difference. I suspect a number of Polo’s Bastards contributors are amongst them. I would recommend the small US agency Relief International based in LA who have a medical team (ER Docs from LA hospitals giving their time voluntarily) in Sri Lanka, providing urgent medical assistance and also developing plans for longer term recovery.
