Authorities in both Malaysia and The Philippines are investigating an attack on a small Northern Sabah (Borneo) beach resort to determine if the dreaded Abu Sayeef group, Filipino Islamic extremists, may be involved.
The incident in which six persons were seized bears all the earmarks of an ASG operation. Ten heavily armed men toting m-16’s swept ashore over the weekend and herded six persons of mixed nationality, mostly Indos, Malay and Filipino into a speed boat with several powerful outboards, commonly called a KUMPIT and fled out to sea. In April of 2000 The ASG seized 20 people, mostly westerners from a resport in Sidapan, roughly the same area and later exchanged them for reported millions in ransom.
The ranks of ASG have been thinned recently due to military operations. Most Phil resorts are heavily guarded and patroled by naval craft against attack. This area does have numerous pirate bands, however they usually focus on shipping and pleasure craft.
