Saipan is much the same in terms of its popularity. Seriously, it costs like $300 for a weekend package tour from Tokyo sometimes. They love the place.
I suspect you would be disappointed.

Seems JAL just went bankrupt so those packages might get a bit pricier.
Read Theroux’s Happy Isles of Oceania and you might find some other nice Pacific islands with less US military folks dancing around.

One of my future tours will be heavily based on Mitchener’s Tales of the South Pacific.
