Been a long time in coming, but all good things come to he who waits.
Plus it’s been great fun keeping Karlos hanging on. (He sent me this months ago)

Excellently worded piece on Abkhazia now on the main site. Your best to date, I think, K.

      Cheers,

      Lee.

I should be in Georgia for a few more months. If you get here in a few months like you said drop me a line as bigheadmanta @ yahoo.com

Even if you are nuts I don’t think that you would kill me over a beer.

The photos I have seen of the place are always incredible.

But retirement there? That’s a pretty big vote of confidence in a place.

      2charlie,

I skipped Pitsunda because I thought it was just a bunch of tower blocks along the coast, not really worth the visit, but now I realise i may have missed something.

Other than that, I paid the visit to both Gulripsh and Tsebelda as well, but that was right when Georgians enterd Kodori, and I was, “kindly” sent away of the place.

About Russian and CIS forces, I wrote something on that here:

      2C,

I know that you are pro Abkaz, and I am not trying to pick a fight here, but there really should not be any talk of “sovreignty”. Each day I am here I come in contact with people that fled their homes, and it saddes me to no end that this drama has been alowed to play out for so long. The only way that any sort of sovreignty can be claimed is to return the IDPs, and then vote. The current format is flawed to say the least. I hope that some of the new focus on the area from the US and the EU will yeild positive results for BOTH groups.

P.S. As I type this I sit across from a girl who had a sister die because she froze on the walk out.

Could you provide me with some links to your historical references?

Edit: I took it upon myself to look for other sources (but would still like to see yours), and I have found a found a few different things.

One thing like much of this region (by region I mean anything within about 1000 miles) Abkazia was a principality ruled by the Shevershidze dynasty pre soviet rule. ( I personally know a Shevershidze that can trace her lines directly to this dynasty.)

Also pre soviet rule the demographics were such that Georgians outnumbered Abkaz better than two to one (This comes from wiki, but the cited source is encyclopedia Britannica c 1911. I will continue to look into it). This would counter you argument that Georgians did not live in the area in mass until Stain came to power. (side note he really was not all that great for Georgia. Beria on the other hand seemed to have more nationalistic feelings.)

The war in 92-93 was in fact lost by the Georgians. There is no way around that , but what you fail to mention in your civil war reference is that a cease fire was brokered 4 times, and 4 times the Russians used this as an opportunity to reinforce and rearm the Abkaz before the Abkaz resumed hostilities. It is hard to call this a civil war for independence when it is more of a proxy land grab.

I think that the above is part of the reason that not a single country has given any recognition to Abkazia. The same applies to the situation in Moldova as well (not exact circumstances, but you get the picture). I can only hope that Russia does not try to use what ever comes out of Kosovo as an example for settling this conflict because they could not be further removed from one another. Kosovo has had a truly international peace keeping force where as the conflicks in Abkazia and S. Osetia have only been monitored (as you stated) by a half assed UN force (because Russia has a seat on the SC), and the peace keepers are in fact not neural at all.

In closing I am not trying to start a flame war. I am just not sure how you can see this as some sort of freedom fight. Too me it is very clear that a few powerful (read now rich) rule, but do not do anything without asking Moscow first, and that the current situation has little to do with a fight for freedom.

If in fact Abkazia does not come back under Georgian control and you do retire there I will make the short trip from Zugdidi or Javari (where I plan to retire) and buy you a beer. Would you still move there if Georgia does regain control?

It is as clear as day now why we see this differently. I think the wine is crap for the most part and would rather drink the cha cha/vokda.
