A lot of unintended consequences, by the look of it, of both French and US actions. What’s sad (to my mind) is that obsession with AQ will result in policy reactions making things worse. It seems to me, from only very superficial knowledge of the region, that if ‘we’ were to support anyone in Northern Mali, the secular and separatist Tuareg would be a good candidate, and it might be the route to decreasing, rather than boosting, the reach of AQIM. But of course that won’t happen.
