Calcutta plans to ban rickshaw-pulling, a century-old practice that has been prohibited or died off in most of the world.
Since the end of the 19th century, rickshaw pullers have been plying Calcutta’s narrow lanes – a practice that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya called “inhuman”.
“It is bad for our image,” said Bhattacharya, the top elected official of West Bengal state, of which Calcutta is the capital.
The pullers have resisted past attempts to ban their trade, demanding compensation or alternative jobs. There are currently about 20,000 of them in the city of 10 million people.
Bhattacharya said the rickshaws will be eliminated in three to four months, giving officials enough time to find other jobs for the pullers, he said.
“We have to think of alternatives for those who pull the rickshaws, and also for those who ride the rickshaws,” he said.
A typical 15 minute ride in a human-pulled rickshaw costs 10 rupees ($A.25). A 15 minute motorised rickshaw ride costs about twice that.
Authorities banned the rickshaws from the city’s main streets three years ago. But most of Calcutta is a jumble of narrow, crowded alleyways, where the rickshaws are a cheap and convenient form of transport.
The rickshaws were introduced to the city by Chinese traders more than a century ago, and British rulers in Calcutta adopted a law that declared rickshaws a means of public transportation in 1919.
China banned rickshaws after the communists seized power more than a half century ago. Elsewhere in Asia, most of them are now pulled by bicycles, or are motorised.
But the human pullers have hung on in Calcutta – which, ironically, has been ruled since 1978 by communists with ideological links to the Chinese.
The announcement of the ban came as India celebrated 58 years of independence.

It’s a tricky one but bear with me…
The amount of meaningless nonsense that Mach posts is, without question, unrivalled. No one has drawn such flack here, or at the BFC, since the likes of The Real Allen, Designed or Know Islam.
I myself was engaged in a spat with him recently over the thread regarding the pictures of an evening at Oxford, in the company of Zakhayev and Litvinenko.
On that occasion, Mach PMd me with a well-worded and sincere apology, causing me to regard him in a (slightly) different light.
However, the facts are these – No matter how much you disagree, or concur with Mach’s convoluted and meandering posts, surely only one thing really counts… How goes the majority vote?
The answer is, a resounding (landslide, even) majority vote in favour or axeing the fellow.
Or is that the only thing that counts?
Should we not consider that the ultimate aim of any website is to draw in viewers and build traffic stats month on month?Well, if that’s the case, then I will be the first to say that the PBs forum hasn’t seen such a heightened level of activity for some time, albeit angry, diatribe kind of activity.
But also let’s not discount the numerous kind offers of alcohol from the forum’s regulars. They certainly know my achilles heel if not Rob’s!
For the time being, though, Mach, Rob has declared strike 2. It would be totally wrong of me, futile even, to attempt to over rule that, but I may have just gained you a small amount of lattitude. A very small amount.
Don’t think I’m trying to sound superior or that I’m attempting to take any form of moral high ground with this response, but strike 3 is peering over your shoulder and you seem to be very short on allies at this point in time.
Best advice I can give you right now is keep your posts short and succinct for now, and endeavour to take the spotlight off of yourself.

i just noticed that you asked me a question to which i did not respond.
here is my answer. my main concern is whether or not the advice is GOOD. if it is, i will do my best to take it however it comes.
frankly, i get the very distinct feeling they don’t care for my moniker at the BFC. and while i have absolutely no interest in tatooing my chest or any other part of my body, i would be quite proud to wear a Banned From The BFC t-shirt. on the back it could list every other scuzzy, cheap, sleezy bastion of male chauvinism i’ve been denied entrance to or asked, politely or otherwise, to leave.
so, the list of BFC verboten now encompasses The Good, The Bad, and The Fugly. and lastly, but never leastly, those who just don’t know when to Shut The Fuck Up.
i will leave it to you to fugure out where you fit in.
lest you get the wrong idea, i would categorize myself as all of the above, having recently rounded third and beating it for home at the blistering rate of 75wpm. i thought the previous statement was a mixed metaphor referencing baseball and typewriter vernacular but my handy Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary (the dearest book i own) says this is the definition of a simile. whatever. the point is, i am describing a well-rounded person, a monster, or an american depending on your point of view.

however, i must admit that the only thing i hate more than talking is talking in public. perhaps i will follow the etiquette example of my dear friend Sir Jefe the Rude and, in true internet fashion, go on my merry way without saying goodbye. i will say that it is good to see that he is still in some semblance of alive.
but what really chaps my ass about all of this is that i don’t even talk this way in real life. and that my problems seem to revolve around the use of words like this and that . what kind of words are these and why do i have so much trouble using them in a sentence?
