You know... Senegal is a BRILLIANT country, where people are extremely friendly and warm. That accounts for 90% of the people out there.

The other 10% of the people are scamming all the time, and these are the ones that will approach "white" people, looking for extra cash.

You say you travelled a lot... and each one of these scams you mentioned are so OBVIOUS. I am actually surprised that a travelled and knowledgeable person would get caught up in so many scams.

Yes... be polite, I agree... but before saying yes to anything... THINK!!! 90% of the time you will try to get scammed by 10% of the people who di this for a living. 90% of the time, you will be approached by a scammer. The signs are easy... NOBODY GIVES THINGS AWAY FOR FREE... and that is a fact, especially in Dakar... not gifts... not even time. EXPECT TO PAY, if you simply make decent eye contact. That is all I can say out of MY experience.

Hi Sean,

I can so relate to this in northern africa. Currently I'm in the Congo's with your guidebook which has been a good help to me. Altough I must correct you in the way thay it is possible to go overland from Cameroon to Brazzaville. The mambila river can be crossed by a small ferry (50000CFA).

Currently waiting in Brazza for my DRC visa to continue overlanding towards Zambia..

Cheers,
Sjoerd
