Interesting this Africa. Noted on the Travelsapien site a post touting a newly released book by Rick Antonson called To Timbuktu for a haircut. A humble, well written book describing the dreams, the anticipation and then the reality of Timbuktu. One could say the same likely for most of Africa. What is the dream? What is the reality? Africa is a cruel country overall. Continued savagery, corruption and deceit. In many parts climate takes it's toll but it would seem it is the human element that takes the larger purse. Freaky politics. Displacement. Lack of education. Religion. Frankly in many opinionated travelers mind Africa is a mess. Human communities in it's most primitive form. This book by Antonson does not take you into the abyss but gives hope and balance especially to his hown experience. This guy is a very good writer and that makes the journey better.
